Equinox Fall 2011
Solution
solution The central image of this poster is a ghoul wearing the mask of a pretty girl.   (1) The face on the mask is that of Edie Sedgewick, a Warhol protege who died young of overindulgence.   The word "EDIE" is also written in the spider web.

(2) The morse code spells "Black Park", which is the neighborhood name for the Edna Metz Wells park near Cameron Village. (3)  The binary code spells "plaque crack fake rock".  Nearby is the ghost of an image of Edie Sedgewick, painted by a graffiti artists.  The city has tried to erase it, but we can still see it.

The seeker must cross the stream and climb the fake rock wall to find the plaque, which is in, well, a crack.  The words say "The Ghost of the Girl says stay out of the water" which is helpful advice, as the water of this park seems unwholesome.

On the plaque, there is an image of a quail, standing on a ridge.  (4) There is also a quail on the poster.  These clues suggest 'Quail Ridge Book Store', where a packet of clues is available upon asking at the counter.

In this packet are some jigsaw puzzle pieces and a faux tarot card.

solution part 1 The card says 'DIX' which is the roman numeral for 509. (The girl in the woods, if seen would have a mess, she is wearing just a tablecloth perhaps she needs a dress)  This clue leads to John Montgomery's Violin shop, an interesting place on Hillsborough street.  There you get another packet, again more puzzle pieces and a faux tarot card.

solution part 2
The card says 4 in roman numerals, and has a compass pointing north, with a pig.  This is NoFo at the Pig (named after North Fourth street in Wilmington).  At the NoFo, you find the last packet, and the remaining puzzle pieces.

solution part 3 The solution to this clue is the graveyard without stones at the old Wake County Home, adjacent to the Emanuel Baptist Church on Nobel Road.  There you find a  plaque hidden within a rickety seating structure that encircles a beautiful old oak.  The plaque is in greek, but translates to "www.raleightreasurehunt.com/zombie.php"

This leads to a web page that plays the "Hall of the Mountain King" from the Peer Gynt Suite and has the riddle:

The Vampire whistles this tune
The child has lost her balloon
In the two symbols next
Look for what is lost
On the equinox.

The reference is to the the Fritz Lang movie "M", about a child-killer in Dusseldorf in the 1920's, who was called the 'Vampire of Dusseldorf'.  This character whistles the Hall of the Mountain King while stalking his victims.

The two characters next are N & O.  This takes the seeker to the News and Observer, the lost section, on the equinox, where the following 'lost' ad gives the next clue:

Lost Key, Silver.  Last seen flying east from the 0009 building.  If found, call (038)048-6032.

The number is the ISBN for the book Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier.  This book formed the key of a WWII code popularized in Ken Follett's book "The Key to Rebecca".  Using the same strategy, the numbers in the poster translate to "Long Finger Shadow Points".  (6)

This is a reference to the Masquerade puzzle, in which the  Golden Rabbit treasure (5) is found at the tip of the noon shadow of a monument on the equinox.  There is an image of a sundial that supports the noon shadow idea. (7)  The ghoul with a mask is also a reference to the  book "Masquerade" (8)

The 0009 building exists in reality as the revenue building in downtown Raleigh, but also exists as the '0009 building' in Google Earth.  The reference to flying suggests that the seeker is to begin at the 0009 building and 'fly' in google earth until they find a monument in Oakwood Cemetery, due East.  This jigsaw puzzle clue suggests 'Google Earth'.

The last clue says:
Last night I dreamed I was flying again,
Low to the ground
Down a street and over a little ravine.
Then I saw it,
Up on the left.
It was the only one out there.

If the seeker begins at the Eastern door of the 0009 building, and flies due east, a 3-D rendering of the Bartholomew Moore monument appears.  The key is hidden under a stone seat at the point indicated by the shadow of the monument cast at solar noon.
